The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet. -Frederick Beuchner

Our Church

We are thankful for life, for Jesus our Lord, for the courage and vision of our church founders. In gratitude, we covenant with God and with one another, seeking as a church and as individuals to be faithful to God's will. We pray for hearts that open, minds that understand, and lives that serve. (1981)

Welcome to First Central Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, in midtown Omaha, Nebraska. First Central is the oldest continuously worshiping Protestant church in Omaha.

First Central has a busy Sunday morning schedule, with worship and education opportunities for children and adults. Check out our calendar and the Congregationalist(soon) online.

Faith Forums -- Every year First Central hosts a series of distinguished speakers to lead us in a critical examination of issues in our city, our country and our world. We meet at 9a.m. on Sunday mornings for coffee and bagels, and begin our discussions at 9:10. See the education page for upcoming speakers.

Our nursery is a bright, warm, and loving place for our youngest members. It is on the Courtyard level and usually has a lively crowd on Sunday mornings. Carolyn and Melissa welcome infants and preschoolers on Sunday mornings from 9 to 11:30 a.m..

Grand Central Stations: First Central's unique and exciting church school for ages 3 through grade 6. We meet in the Drama Station on the Patio level at 9:10 a.m. during the school year, and begin with a story at 9:15.

Evergreen Thrift Shop: Located on the Harney Street side of the building, the Thrift Shop (341-9398) is open Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., as well as after worship on the second Sunday of the month. Donations of good quality items are always welcome. Come find a bargain!

The ARTery is a non-profit arts education organization committed to bringing the arts to everyone. An ever-expanding variety of camps, classes, and workshops are held in rented space at First Central. The ARTery is not affiliated with the church, but we are happy to have them bring music and arts into the building, and assist them in their goal of bringing the arts to everyone. More information is available online at www.ArteryOmaha.org.

First Central is a member church of Connections, a coalition of progressive Christian congregations who together and separately:

  • Reclaim thoughtful dialogue

  • Reject divisive dogmatism

  • Renew spiritual vitality

  • Respond with justice and mercy

  • Rejoice in inclusive community

  • First Central Congregational United Church of Christ is a part of the Nebraska Conference of The United Church of Christ

First Central Congregational Church is an inclusive faith community, cherishing diversity, social justice, and freedom of thought. We strive to live our faith by extending Christ's love to all, and enthusiastically welcoming everyone to our progressive congregation. (Identity Statement, 2007)
