Our Church

We are thankful for life, for Jesus our Lord, for the courage and vision of our church founders. In gratitude, we covenant with God and with one another, seeking as a church and as individuals to be faithful to God's will. We pray for hearts that open, minds that understand, and lives that serve.

First Central has a busy Sunday morning schedule, with worship, ministry, and education opportunities for children and adults. We are an open and affirming church.

We are a member church of Connections, a coalition of progressive Christian congregations who together and separately:

  • Reclaim thoughtful dialogue
  • Reject divisive dogmatism
  • Renew spiritual vitality
  • Respond with justice and mercy
  • Rejoice in inclusive community

We are also a part of the Nebraska Conference of The United Church of Christ. First Central Congregational Church is an inclusive faith community, cherishing diversity, social justice, and freedom of thought. We strive to live our faith by extending Christ's love to all, and enthusiastically welcoming everyone to our progressive congregation. (Identity Statement, 2007)

History

The story of First Central Congregational Church is one of continuous growth since its beginning when organized May 4, 1856. Its growth parallels the growth of the City of Omaha, for they began at the same time, in what was Nebraska Territory...

Labyrinth

The labyrinth at First Central is almost an exact copy of the one at Chartres Cathedral outside of Paris, that dates to 1200 or 1230 CE. It is nearly forty-one feet in diameter, and exactly one-sixth of a mile from the entrance to the center..
