Nash

The second night of my mother’s recent visit, we were in Rockbrook Village when Michael said, “Let’s check out the pet store.” The plan for some time has been to get Sebastian a dog for his second birthday. We were interested in Westies, like Sara & Dave’s beloved Henry.

Lo and behold, there was a five-month-old Westie pup in the pet store, and he was half price. Michael was immediately smitten. When they got the dog out of his kennel, he ran toward Sebastian and jumped up on him, kissing him. Sebastian squealed with glee, grabbed the dog and started kissing back. Then they both started chasing each other around squealing. I realized we were taking a dog home, even though the last thing we needed on a busy and snowy weekend with two out-of-town guests was to potty train a puppy. But when the bond between a boy and his dog is immediate and natural, you go with it.

On the way home (we obviously weren’t going out for dinner, as planned), Michael asked Sebastian, “What do you want to name your new dog?” And Sebastian answered, quite clearly and distinctly, “Nash.”

Sebastian doesn’t know a Nash. We’d never heard him say the word before. Doesn’t even seem to be a character in a book he’s read. We’ve even asked his daycare workers.

But it’s a great name, and fits. Plus, a couple of people call Sebastian “Bash,” so now we’ll have Bash and Nash. People have said that sounds like a children’s book title, or an alternative rock band name.

Once he’s housebroken, he’ll likely make some visits to the church office. And the pet blessing will be even more fun for Sebastian this year.

Peace,
Scott
